It is indeed an honor and privilege to be invited to be part of the St John's College web site. This being the first ever web site to be published by a rural Catholic secondary school in Fiji.
One of the primary aims of the web site is to trace the early development of the school and its surroundings. From 1893 Cawaci has seen a Centre for the formation of a catechists, a boys' school for the sons of chiefs, a girls' school, a teacher's college, a seminary and a secondary school. The closure of these institutes gave birth to the amalgamation of St John's College and Loreto High School in 1973. It still operates today as St. John's College, a co-educational boarding school.
Many today see Cawaci as simply a place where St John's College, a Catholic boarding school on the island of Ovalau, is located. Only a few would remember that Cawaci is the place that has played a significant role in the establishment of the Catholic faith and education in Fiji.
This historic place has played an important role in the formation of the lives of thousands of young men and women who have been educated here. Many have enjoyed great achievements and success in their lives due to the invaluable lessons and faith that were learnt and practiced at St John's College. A lot of ex-students have become important leaders in their own communities and the greater community.
The first two Bishops, Julien Vidal and Charles Joseph Nicholas, lived and are buried at Cawaci.
As leader of the Archdiocese of Suva and as an ex-student of St. John's College, I wish to congratulate the school for having the foresight to undertake such a project.
Finally I would like to thank all those who were involved in the setting up of the school's web site. It is my belief that St. John's College will continue its great work in enriching the lives of the many who will pass through her gates, particularly in faith, education and service.
God, bless.
Sincerely,
Petero Mataca
ARCHBISHOP OF SUVA
